[inaudible conversations] >> good morning. we're going to get, we're going to get started with our briefing this morning. the presentation on election 201 by the naleo fund, the national association of latino elected and appointed officials. we're two organizations, one is a membership organization of ofe nation's latino public servants serving county commissions, state legislatures all the way up to members of congress and the united states senate. the naleo educational fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan organization whose mission is to promote the full participation of latinos in the american political process. that includes encouraging legal permanent residents to become u.s. citizens, encouraging all u.s. citizens 18 and older who are eligible to vote, we also provide training opportunities for latino elected and appointed officials, and we promote a policy framework to make sure that participation in our electoral democracy is acc

is not cool. >> let's talk about -- let's talk about appealing to latino voters. there's a new poll out today. back in 2008 mccain had 31% of latino vote. that was not as good as george w. bush in 2004 he had 44% of latino vote. romney need at least a quarter to a third of latino vote toeshs competitive in states like colorado where the debate is and that kind of thing. real quickly because i want to get to donna on this issue. what does he need to do to appeal to latino voters? >> i think latino voters need to know more about mitt romney. they know very little. precious little about him. the little they do know they don't like. he has begun to change his tone. ep needs to continue doing latino outreach and doing events, doing interviews, doing media, pouring money and resources into paid media and to outreach efforts. >> donna to that point, romney has actually moved closer to president obama on immigration issues just very recently saying he's not is going to rerocky the visas, deport young illegal immigrants under the new law here. does that present a problem to the president if he moves c

that came out, cnn-orc poll. latino voters choice for the president. whopping 70% chose president obama compared with 26 terz for mitt romney. romney here is doing worse than john mccain did back in 2008 who got 31%. the latino vote. also worse than george w. bush in 2004 who got 44% of the latino. anna, to you. is there anything at this point that romney can do to get the latino support up? >> well, suzanne, i think praying on novina might help. look, he -- we had a tough primary on the republican side. i think mitt romney has been an unknown commodity to his hispani hispanics. he doesn't come from a border state like john mccain or george w. bush did. he has not done a great intense voter outreach with the latinos because he ran out of money after the primary. he -- let me just be absolutely truthful and give smu straight talk as john mccain would say. mitt romney dug himself into a hole with latinos during the primary. he said some things that are coming back to haunt him. he now needs to find a way to dig himself out of that hole. i think the only way he will do it is if he really c

and jobs. we have a large energy sector. education is a big issue. among the latino population and especially democrats, immigration reform. host: the demographics of the voters in colorado? guest: 52% women, 40% men. we have increased the number of people were voting by mail. 800,000 people have already cast ballots in this state. it is equally divided. one-third of the electorate is a registered republican, won third democrat, one-third unaffiliated. everyone is plan for the group of unaffiliated voters. you'll hear a lot about appealing to women and latinos. we have heard a lot about the bennett strategy and that is the strategy center michael bennett used in running against the tide in 2010. where by appealing to women and latinos he was able to pull a victory in a year or not favorable to democrats. host: where are the traditionally democratic areas of the state? guest: denver is ground zero for democrats. boulder would be another. they have large registration bases in arapahoe m jefferson county. surprisingly, the fifth biggest county for democratic voter registration is

2008. talk about how that is impacting this election. guest: 26% of the state is latino. this voting block has been shown to hear a lot about the economy, a lot about education. immigration does not rank as the highest this year of interest to these voters. it is an underlying across the board thing. are you saying the right thing on these topics. it is 2/3 versus 1/3 that the voters are split on this. this is what candidates are being -- candidates are fighting about. obama made a promise to address it in his first year in office and did not do that. he said he did not have time and did not have a cooperative congress. that has not stopped republicans who say, we can bring a comprehensive immigration reform, which is a term both parties defined differently. they are trying to make that a sales pitch. if you turn on spanish radio, you hear nonstop commercials from both sides. this is a swing state for the president and it is also a swing state for the senate and one of the congressional races on here as well. host: if we are talking with karoun demirjian from the washington son. you

and the republic party have so alienated the fastest growing demographic group in the country the latino community. that was probably the only thing that i thought maybe could have been a gotcha thing. >> bill: now but he said it himself, the paper wasn't pushing him on the latino thing, was the paper? >> no. >> bill: he just said it himself. are there a lot of latino voters in iowa now? does that change the item graphic of the state? >> i will tell you there is probably about 44,000 and i think the population is about 182,000. >> in des moines? >> not in des moines, in iowa. >> 182,000. you have got more people than that. >> in the latino community? yeah, i'm speaking specifically in the latino community. >> bill: all right, so you have 182,000 latinos in the state. and what's the 44,000 you mentioned? >> those are registered to vote. >> bill: okay. now, the state is a dead heat. your radio station very powerful. is your radio station endorsing anybody? >> we have not endorsed anybody just yet. >> bill: do you have a feeling on who is going to take iowa? >> if it was right -- i will will tell you

"the new york times" reporting that both campaigns looking at latinos as deciders in three swing states. that's colorado, nevada, and florida. however, mitt romney trails the president among latinos at the moment in a recent pew poll. when you look at phrases like self-deportation, the issue of the use of illegals, which is seen by tb latino community as being very insensitive, how does this resonate, then? how does this show that the romney campaign does, indeed, value this constituency? >> well, i'm a latina, from florida, originally, now in virginia. but i have to tell you something, immigration's an important issue and governor romney has made it very clear that he has a long-term plan for immigration policy in this country. where he's going to be working with both parties. but, you know, for the hispanics, it's about the economy. and you look at a recent poll from fiu, basically saying that nearly half of the latinos believe that obama ended up breaking that promise. secondly, more than half of the latinas also believe that obama is basically not -- you know,

election the latino vote out there in nevada. the stat tistics from boomberg news shows nevada has the largest shift since 2008. latinos cast 15% of the ballot in 2008 and three quarters voted for obama in 2008. talk about how that is impacting the election now. >> there is a huge push to turn more voters out to the polls. to play up all of the rostered issues that seem to matter the most. it's a very large population in the state, it's about 20% of the population is latino organize gin and that goes up in clark county which is where lave is which is the main population of the state. this voting block cares a lot about the economy, a lot about education and immigration disease not rank as the highest issue of interest to these voters but it becomes an issue that is an underlying across the board, are you saying the right thing on this pop sick and it could be 2/3 one these voters are split on that. this is an issue candidates on both sides have been fighting about because obama made a promise to address it his first year in office and did not do that. he said he did not have time a

small percentage that is going to turn out on election day. >> latinos make up 12% of the colorado electorate. there's a recent latino decisions poll which found enthusiasm is way up in that community. some people are more excited this year than they were in '08. what are democrats in your state doing to make sure that latino who support this president overwhelmingly as it seems they do actually get out and vote. >> you're right. the enthusiasm among the latino population is sky high right now. they understand -- we understand. i'm a latino myself. we understand the very clear differences between what mitt romney is trying to sell the latino people and what president obama has shown in his bold leadership. so we just need to continue to show that contrast between the two. i think, frankly, that it's too late for mitt romney amongst the latino community. now it's our job to just ensure that those people that are enthusiastic actually translate to turning their ballots in. >> okay. thanks, rick. >> thanks so much. >>> here's a look at the other stories topping the news now. while geo

, to the latino community. notable he will be there as well. >> very interesting. thanks very, very much, jim acosta in littleton, colorado. >>> all right. this just coming in to cnn. the results of our brand new poll among latinos all over the united states. certainly one of the country's fastest growing and increasingly important groups of voters. look at this. it shows overwhelming support for president obama. he leads mitt romney 70% to 26% among likely latino voters. let's bring in our chief national correspondent john king joining us from denver, the site of the debate tomorrow night. john, you've taken a close look at these numbers. are there any nuggets in there that may be good for the romney campaign? because 70% of latinos saying they're likely to vote for the president of the united states, that's pretty bad for romney. >> reporter: wolf, i've scrubbed the numbers, looked at the cross tops and in a word, no, there is nothing encouraging for the romney campaign in the poll of likely latino voters. one way you judge an incumbent president, president obama, you ask people what do you

people, latinos, african-american, the president has to talk about his record, talk about things he has done, show that he understands their issues and their concerns. be it unemployment, student loans, whatever. or immigration. and then he has to talk about what he has done, what he'll do in the next four years and contrast that with mitt romney's stance. for latinos, for example, i think latinos would be interested to hear the president's version of the dream act he implemented, which is an important issue, versus mitt romney's policy of self-deportation. >> of 11 million people. >> that's a ludicrous claim he's going to do it. it's an insult. anyway, president obama swamps mitt romney among young voters, 18 to 34 age group but they're less enthusiastic this time around. now 52% of young voters call themselves extremely interested in the electric. back in 2008 that number was 20 points higher. and in an effort to fire up young voters, the president has been on a college tour of u.s. campuses. this last week he was at ohio state. let's listen. >> grab your friends, grab everybody in yo

it is all about jobs. >>neil: we are seeing a shift, more latinos voting for mitt romney, more young people voting for mitt romney in this state, again, these are developments unique to florida because they do know show up in other states and we will get into this later in the show. what do you make of that? and how important is the latino vote to mitt romney? >>guest: very important. every vote counts. in our state i ran on a campaign, seven steps to seven jobs over seven years. all i have talked about is jobs. they know what we have done works. so they will support governor romney. he knows the same thing. >>neil: that is what he has to do tonight? he has to keep emphasizing jobs, everything comes back to jobs. >>guest: it all comes back to jobs. >>neil: how do you discuss foreign policy? >>guest: it should be predictable. business people invest. if we want more jobs, we have to have a foreign policy that is predictable so businesses comfortable investing in america or another country. we have a logical consistent foreign policy. >>neil: governor, this is not meant at a slap but i see mit

-american latino voters will show up like they did in the past. more importantly there is all the talk about polls and the likely voters and talk about registered voters. we can talk about actual voters. if you look at places like ohio where voting started today, the democratic coalition is turning out in force. you are seeing more voting in precincts that went for obama than those who went for mccain. we are seeing people aren inning gauged and showing up to vote. >> if democrats are trailing in party id and if republicans come out big and have a huge turnout, what will that mean for the president and his chances of winning a second term? >> i will say two things on that. going back to the point i made earlier, people are turning out early to vote. look at the battle ground states 1k3* almost always have early voting states. colorado, iowa, florida. the numbers of people are casting votes and they don't match the numbers that we have seen. and more importantly, look, it is a trick that this comes down to a set of states and we talk about how we will win the presidency. if you look across the boar

're probably not going to win there. and one of the primary reasons is because latinos in that state are just fed up with republicans. not so much on rhetoric, but because of the policies how do you fix that in your party and how frustrated are you? >> i'm not quite sure if it is policies and i'll tell you why. remember that the president's been very good. he promised in his first 12 months, he gave his word, to the country, and to the latino population in the country in particular that within the first 12 months he was going to do comprehensive immigration reform. he didn't do it. but by the way, look, look at senator reid's election. he did exceedingly well latino population because he promised he was going to present and pass the dream act. he did it. he did a version of it, by the way, without talking to anybody else. but then after that, after the election, he doesn't mention it anymore. he doesn't do it anymore. he hasn't even proposed it anymore. so we see this time and time again. so it really is rhetoric. it's not policy. on the policies, look at the increase in poverty. the group of

color. maria theresa kumar is president and ceo of vote latino and professor james peterson is professor of african studies at lehigh university. mitt romney's record may be instructive. as governor of massachusetts he gutted affirmative action in the dead of night, during a holiday, without any consultation whatsoever. is this an example of how minorities would fare under a president romney? >> i think it's also indicative just yesterday "the wall street journal" asked mitt romney if he believed in affirmative action, he couldn't answer yes on no, he kept quiet. if he can't give a straight answer on an issue that's not a campaign issue is incredibly telling. this issue before the supreme court, it's supported by 17 senators both democratic and republican. the military is in support of it, as are a lot have business leaders. fortune 100 companies. they are support ty because they recognize demographics are changing. as americans we should make sure we have a fair shot at the american dream, through our educational system. >> absolutely. professor, we know where mitt romney stands. as for

, the president will go west. the latino vote is critical to nevada. when you got a dead heat race that either candidate could win, you're going to spend a lot of time and a lot of hours on the road and because you have to go from nevada to new hampshire to florida, got a lot of ground to cover. >> the president acknowledging how important the latino vote is. this is something the president told the des moines register, apparently kind of off the record, the quote now coming from an interview, a transcript of which the white house released just this morning, saying this is off the record, i will just be very blunt, should i win a second term, a big reason i will win a second term is because the republican nominee and the republican party have so alienated the fastest growing demographic group in the country, the latino community. so that acknowledgement there. he says it is off the record, it was his intent, it seems as though to be on the record as making it very notable that the latino vote is pivotal. >> this was an odd one, fred. the president called the editor and the top officials of des

the middle of the road or the latino voters? >> geraldo, i think it will be important for him to talk about immigration reform and have a balanced approach of cutting down the time that we have for applications and people coming to the united states legally. i think he has to make sure he is enforcing the laws and as you know the big issue for virginians are going to be the defense cuts and i think that is what governor romney is going to sell and i think that is ultimately what is going to help him win the commonwealth of virginia. >> geraldo: what about the latino vote, though, congressman? i underand it that defense is a huge, huge issue in the commonwealth where there is so many defense facilities. but there are substantial number of latinos there, particularly around the disdistrict of columbia. if he talks tough, first of alllet me ask you this. i withdraw that statement. the governor said he will not repeal president obama's temporary dream act measure where he gave a pass, a two year visa to those students you know story who were brought here as children. do you regret that governor

in a more aggressive way. >> i want to ask you about the enthusiasm gap particularly among latino voters. we see in our polling while the president has a huge edge in the latino vote, there's a real drop-off since 2008 when then it was 77% enthusiasm, now it is 59% in terms of hispanic americans. what you going to do to make sure people turn out? >> nare sending me all over the country. i'll be at jefferson-jackson dinner in iowa, i've been it to florida. we have surrogates all across the country. we have a grassroots campaign that has been talked about as the most aggressive, the most focused on social media and on a broad cross-section of speaking to voters. we're going to knock on doors and talk to voters, and we're going to get that vote out. i agree that our work is cut out for us. it's cut out for them, too. that's what elections are all about. >> thank you very much, mr. mayor. i know you're out there at the campaign event where the president is going to be speaking later. you just gave your speech, and thanks for joining us today. >> thank you, andrea. sorry we were a little late, bu

to break. they will talk a lot about appealing to women, appealing to latinos. throughout the course of the 2012 campaign, we have heard a lot about the strategy of appealing to women and latinos to eke out a victory for democrats. host: where are the traditionally democratic and republican areas of the state? guest: denver and boulder tend to be democratic. the fifth biggest county for democrats with voter registration is el paso county. that is typically viewed as sort of a republican stronghold, and it is. increasingly, we have seen the ski area communities start to turn democratic. host: a lot of headlines and focus on early voting in this presidential contest. does colorado have it? guest: we do and we have mail in voting about two million people voted early absentee in the 2008 election. that is expected to grow to two 0.5 million this election cycle. keep in mind that colorado has about 2.8 million active voters. about three-quarters of the vote should be conducted in colorado. host: on election day, how do people vote? guest: there are three ways, optical machines, scanning m

constituencies that could alter the situation, particularly in florida. we're going to start with latinos here. we've got two recent polls that show a conflicting picture on who latinos in florida support for president. a miami herald florida international university poll shows obama beating romney by seven points. but a tampa bay times miami herald poll shows romney up by two points. so you're a member of romney's hispanic steering committee. what are you seeing on the ground as far as latino vote goes? >> the latino community has been hit really, really hard by this recession. if you look at, for example, children in poverty, the largest group of children in poverty are the hispanic latino children in the united states. poverty has increased among latinos. unemployment, frankly, is excessively high. there are no jobs. really in the entire country, and that also stands true for florida. so, when all the rhetoric is said and done, the question is, are -- do our grandchildren and our children deserve this? is this the best the united states can be? or do they deserve, and frankly do we deserve,

on northern virginia, the exsurbs around richmond city and hampton rhodes. large latino registration since 2008 about a 20% increase in latino registration. and also young people. so those are areas where we're really pushing to make sure the vote comes out on november 6th. >> jennifer: it is safe to say the biggest part of your effort will be getting out the vote rather than persuasion? really a huge effort is in gotv right? >> the persuasion eh fore has been going on. this effort has been working for weeks, months even. so persuasion has gone on and certainly over the next eleven to ten days here it is a get out to vote now, which is a two-step process in virginia. because we don't have voter registration. we have to identify someone who is leaning our way, and make sure they get out and exercise their fundamental right to vote. in 2008 we had a 75% turnout. so we're really pushing, the largest the turnout the better -- >> jennifer: talk to me quickly, the republican's ground game. we only have about 30 seconds, but what are they going to get out the vote that you ha
